What size heat pump does my home need? A sizing guide

Sizing is the most important — and most often botched — step of a heat pump project. Too small and it struggles in deep cold; too large and it short-cycles, wears out fast and dehumidifies poorly.

It is not just square footage

Proper sizing rests on a load calculation (the "Manual J" method) accounting for floor area, but also insulation, windows, orientation, occupancy and how airtight the home is. Two homes of identical size can need very different systems.

Rough benchmarks

For illustration only: a 12,000 BTU wall unit often suits an open area of 400 to 600 sq ft, 18,000 BTU covers 600–900, and 24,000 BTU covers 900–1,200. Whole-home central heat pumps typically run 2 to 4 tons — but only a calculation confirms the right choice.

Common mistakes

Oversizing "to be safe" is mistake number one: the unit hits temperature too fast, shuts off, and leaves the house clammy. Undersizing forces electric backup and erases the savings. We measure instead of guessing.
