Heat pump maintenance: a season-by-season guide

A well-maintained heat pump lasts longer, uses less energy and rarely fails at the worst moment. Here is what to do, and when.

Spring (before cooling season)

Clean or replace filters, clear winter debris from the outdoor unit, and have a technician check refrigerant and the coil before the first heat wave.

Autumn (before heating season)

Do the filter again, test heating mode, and make sure the outdoor unit is raised and clear so snow and ice cannot build up.

Year-round

Keep at least 45 cm of clearance around the outdoor unit, never block indoor heads, and watch for any new noise or drop in performance.
