Central or wall-mounted air conditioning: the right choice for your home

Both cool effectively — the right choice comes down to your ductwork and your room-by-room needs.

Central air conditioning

Ideal if you already have ducts: it cools the whole home evenly from one system, quietly and powerfully. It is the natural pairing with a forced-air furnace.

Wall-mounted (mini-split)

Perfect without ducts — for plexes, condos, additions or rooms that overheat. One outdoor unit feeds one or more heads, with independent control per room, and often heating as a bonus.

Our recommendation

Existing ducts and whole-home cooling needed? Central. No ducts, or targeted zones? Wall-mounted. Often a heat pump (either type) is the best overall choice since it heats as well.
